Hedera Helix

Hedera helix, commonly known as English Ivy, is a prolific motif that spans many lands and ages throughout art history. In some regions considered an invasive, in others revered for it's late season supply of nectar for the insects and birds, and almost always admired for its ability to ascend and engulf buildings through it's aerial roots.

The former is a famously iconic feature at Harvard University, the Alma Mater of the client who commissioned this piece for her home. Built to be site specific floating above a mantle, this sculpture appeared to grow from the cracks, a fiction of nature overtaking its architectural structure.
